Lunar: Silver Star is a role-playing video game originally released on the Sega CD (Mega-CD) in 1992. Developed by Game Arts, the game was one of the first Japanese-style RPGs to be released in North America. The story follows Alex, a young man living in the small town of Burg who dreams of becoming a Dragonmaster like his hero Dyne. After discovering an ancient artifact known as the Lunar Whale and meeting a mysterious girl named Luna, Alex embarks on a quest to save the world from evil forces and fulfill his destiny.
The game features traditional turn-based combat with a variety of weapons and magic spells for Alex and his party members to use. The player must also explore towns, dungeons, and other locations to progress through the story. Along the way, they will be able to recruit new allies and purchase items from shops. As they progress through the game, their characters will gain experience points which can be used to increase their stats or learn new abilities.
The game's visuals were praised for its high quality graphics at the time of release, particularly its anime cutscenes which featured hand-drawn art from renowned artist Toshiyuki Kubooka. It also featured fully voiced dialogue sequences as well as music composed by Noriyuki Iwadare and Takashi Yoshida which has been praised for its atmosphere and memorable melodies.
The legacy of Lunar: Silver Star continues today with various remakes such as Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete (PlayStation) and Lunar Legend (Game Boy Advance). It has also spawned several sequels including Eternal Blue (Sega CD/Saturn) and Dragon Song (Nintendo DS). Despite being over 25 years old, it remains one of the most beloved RPG franchises in gaming history with fans around the world still playing it today.
