Dungeon Master II: The Legend of Skullkeep is a turn-based dungeon crawler and role-playing game released for the Sega CD (Mega-CD) in 1994. The game is the sequel to the popular dungeon crawler, Dungeon Master, which was released for PCs and other platforms in 1987. Set three years after the original game, this new adventure takes place in a world known as “Skullkeep” where a powerful sorcerer named Xalynth has taken control of the land. As a group of adventurers, you must travel through dungeons and fight monsters to reclaim your freedom and save the kingdom from Xalynth’s tyranny.
The game features an overhead view of each level, with your character represented by an icon on the map. You can move your character around using either a joystick or keyboard controls. Your character’s stats are displayed on the bottom left corner of the screen and you can also access menus that allow you to equip items, cast spells, use items, etc. Enemies appear randomly on each level and you must defeat them in order to progress further into the dungeon. You can attack enemies using weapons or spells that can be found throughout the levels or purchased at shops located in some levels. When an enemy is defeated they will drop gold coins which can be used to purchase better equipment and spells.
As you progress through each level you will encounter puzzles that require problem solving skills to complete them. These puzzles range from simple switch puzzles to more complex logic puzzles that require a bit of thought before you can solve them. There are also secret doors throughout each level which lead to bonus areas where more powerful weapons and items can be found if solved correctly.
The graphics for Dungeon Master II: The Legend of Skullkeep are quite impressive for its time with detailed backgrounds, animated characters, spell effects, weather effects and more all adding up to create an immersive experience for players who enjoy exploring dungeons and fighting monsters while solving puzzles along their way.
Overall Dungeon Master II: The Legend of Skullkeep is an enjoyable dungeon crawling experience that offers hours upon hours of entertainment for fans of this genre of games with its deep story line, challenging puzzles and intense battles against enemies both big and small making it one of the best games available for the Sega CD (Mega-CD).
