ECCO the Dolphin is a side-scrolling action-adventure game developed by Novotrade International and released for the Sega CD (Mega-CD) in North America and Europe in 1994. The game follows ECCO, a bottlenose dolphin, as he travels through time to save his species from an alien race known as the Vortex.
The game begins with ECCO swimming around near his home reef when suddenly he finds himself transported to a strange place. He soon meets an ancient being called The Astral who informs him of the plight of his species: they are being threatened by an alien race called the Vortex and only ECCO can save them. To do this, he must travel through time and space to find pieces of an ancient artifact that will unlock the secrets of the Vortex and save his people.
The player guides ECCO through various levels set in different time periods (including prehistoric times, Atlantis, and future Earth). Along the way, ECCO can use sonar to interact with objects in the environment such as rocks and sea plants which can reveal hidden items or pathways. He also has access to special abilities such as echolocation which allow him to see invisible enemies or objects. In addition, ECCO can collect pearls which act as currency for purchasing upgrades and items throughout his journey.
The game features several boss battles against powerful enemies such as giant sharks and sea monsters that require quick reflexes and strategic thinking to defeat. If successful, these battles reward ECCO with new abilities or upgrades which help him progress further in his quest.
ECCO The Dolphin was well received upon its release for its unique gameplay mechanics, detailed graphics, atmospheric soundtrack, and engaging story line. Critics praised its use of exploration elements combined with puzzle solving challenges that made it stand out from other games at the time. It has since become a cult classic among Sega fans and spawned several sequels on various platforms over the years including Game Gear, Saturn, Dreamcast, Xbox Live Arcade and iOS devices.
