Cliffhanger is a 1993 action-adventure video game developed by Sony Imagesoft and published by Sega for the Sega CD/Mega-CD. The game is based on the 1993 film of the same name, starring Sylvester Stallone. Players take on the role of John "The Hangman" Cutter, an ex-mountain climber turned bounty hunter, who is tasked with rescuing a group of kidnapped scientists from the hands of a terrorist group known as "The Outlaws".
The game features side-scrolling platforming sections and 3D driving sections. In the platforming sections, players can jump, climb and swing from various objects in order to reach higher areas. They must also battle enemies using punches and kicks, as well as collect items such as health packs and ammunition. In the 3D driving sections, players drive a jeep through various environments while shooting enemies with guns mounted on either side of the vehicle.
At certain points in the game, players are presented with choices that will affect how they progress through certain levels. For example, when presented with two paths to take at one point in the level, choosing one path could lead to a dead end while choosing another could lead to an easier route. This adds an element of strategy to the game that makes it more than just a typical action-platformer.
Overall, Cliffhanger is an enjoyable action-adventure game for fans of both Sylvester Stallone movies and Sega CD/Mega-CD games alike. Its varied gameplay mechanics help keep things interesting throughout its eight levels, while its graphics have aged surprisingly well over time. With its challenging platforming sequences and intense driving sequences, Cliffhanger is sure to provide hours of entertainment for any fan of classic gaming or action films.
