Shadow of the Beast 2 is a side-scrolling action game released for the Sega CD/Mega-CD in 1994. Developed by Reflections Interactive and published by Psygnosis, it was the sequel to 1989's Shadow of the Beast for the Amiga computer platform.
The game's story follows Aarbron, a human transformed into an animalistic creature known as a "Beast". The player controls Aarbron as he attempts to recover his lost memories and discover his true identity. The game features nine levels, each with its own unique enemies and obstacles. Progressing through levels involves defeating bosses, solving puzzles, collecting items, and reaching certain checkpoints.
The graphics in Shadow of the Beast 2 are significantly improved over its predecessor. The Sega CD version features redbook audio tracks for background music and sound effects. Animations are smooth and detailed, making use of sprite scaling techniques to create a sense of depth in each level.
Gameplay is similar to that of other side-scrolling action games from this era such as Super Mario Bros., Castlevania and Ghouls 'n Ghosts. Aarbron can run, jump, attack enemies with his claws or use magical spells to defeat them. He can also pick up special items which grant him additional abilities such as increased speed or invincibility.
Shadow of the Beast 2 has been praised for its high production values, detailed graphics and challenging gameplay. It was well received by critics upon release who praised its visuals and sound design while noting its difficulty level could be off-putting to some players. The Sega CD version has since become a cult classic amongst fans due to its unique visuals and audio presentation along with its intense challenge level which requires skillful play in order to progress through the game's levels.
