ECCO – The Tides of Time is a Sega CD/Mega-CD game released in 1994. It is the sequel to ECCO the Dolphin and was developed by Novotrade International and published by Sega.
The game follows Ecco, a young dolphin, as he embarks on a journey through time in order to save his pod from destruction. The game starts with Ecco being attacked by an unknown force that destroys his home and sends him into another realm. In this realm, Ecco meets ancient creatures called Guardians who tell him about the destruction of their world at the hands of an evil entity known as the Vortex Queen. They reveal that she plans to use her power to take over all of time and space, but she needs five magical artifacts in order to do so. Ecco must travel through five different ages - Prehistoric, Ancient Egypt, Atlantis, Future Earth and Hollow World - in order to collect these artifacts before the Vortex Queen can get her hands on them.
Throughout each level Ecco must swim around various obstacles while avoiding enemies such as sharks and jellyfish. There are also puzzles scattered throughout each level which need to be solved in order to progress further. These puzzles range from deciphering hieroglyphics to figuring out how to open doors or activate switches. Some levels also feature boss battles where Ecco has to defeat powerful monsters in order to progress forward.
The graphics of ECCO – The Tides of Time are quite impressive for its time with detailed water effects and varied environments ranging from underwater ruins to ancient temples and futuristic cities. The soundtrack is also quite good with catchy tunes that fit the setting perfectly.
ECCO – The Tides of Time is a challenging yet rewarding experience that should not be missed by fans of action-adventure games or those looking for something unique on the Sega CD/Mega-CD platform. With its stunning visuals, great soundtrack and engaging gameplay it stands as one of the best games available for this console generation
