Frank Thomas’ Big Hurt Baseball for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) is a baseball game released in 1995. It was developed by Iguana Entertainment and published by Acclaim Entertainment. The game is officially licensed from Major League Baseball and the Major League Baseball Players Association, which allowed for the use of real teams, players, and stadiums.
The main objective of the game is to manage a team to success over a season or series of seasons. The player has full control over their team’s roster and can make trades, draft new players, or even sign free agents. A variety of game modes are available including Exhibition Mode, Season Mode, Series Mode, Playoffs Mode, All-Star Game Mode and Home Run Derby Mode.
In Exhibition Mode, the player can choose to play either a single exhibition game or a best-of-three series against any team in the league. In Season Mode, the player manages their team through an entire 162-game season with full statistical tracking. Series mode allows for up to three games against another team in which each win adds to your overall score until one team reaches five wins first. Playoffs mode lets you compete in an 8-team tournament with a different style of play than regular season games; these include doubleheaders, sudden death innings and extra innings. All-Star Game mode allows you to pick your favorite all stars for both American and National Leagues and play an exhibition match between them while Home Run Derby mode lets you pick any two players from either league and have them compete head-to-head in a home run competition .
The graphics are quite good for its time with detailed stadiums and animations that give it a realistic feel. The gameplay is also quite solid with multiple batting styles like power hitting or contact hitting as well as various pitching styles such as fastballs or curveballs. The sound effects are fairly basic but still capture the atmosphere of playing baseball well enough that it doesn't take away from the experience too much.
Overall Frank Thomas’ Big Hurt Baseball is an enjoyable baseball video game that captures all the excitement of playing America's favorite pastime on your SNES console. It offers plenty of options for customization when managing your team as well as various modes that add some replay value to keep things interesting while playing through multiple seasons or tournaments. With decent graphics and sound effects coupled with solid gameplay mechanics this title makes for an enjoyable experience whether you're playing alone or with friends trying to beat each other’s teams!
