Madden NFL ’95 for the Super Nintendo is a classic American football video game released in 1994 by Electronic Arts (EA). The game was the first of its series to be released on the 16-bit console and featured improved graphics, sound, and gameplay over its predecessors. The game was developed by EA’s Tiburon studio and features teams from all 30 then-current National Football League (NFL) franchises. Players can choose to play an exhibition match or compete in a full season mode. It also features commentary from John Madden himself.
The game begins with players selecting their team from any of the 30 NFL teams available at the time, such as the San Francisco 49ers, Dallas Cowboys, Green Bay Packers, and New England Patriots. Once selected, players can customize their team’s playbook and roster to suit their playing style. After customizing their team, players then select whether they want to play an exhibition match or compete in a full season mode.
In both modes of play, players take control of one team as they face off against another team in a battle for gridiron supremacy. Depending on which mode is chosen, either two human players can compete against each other or one player can go up against a computer-controlled opponent. The action takes place on an overhead view of a scaled-down football field with all 22 players represented as sprites in various poses depending on what type of play is being run. Players use the controller’s buttons to call plays and manage formations while controlling their own player on passing plays or kickoffs/punts.
The game also includes several options for customizing gameplay experience such as weather conditions (i.e., snow or rain), quarter length (from 5 minutes to 15 minutes), difficulty level (rookie to pro), and more. Additionally, there are several mini-games included such as field goal kicking and punt return challenges that help break up the regular gameplay.
Madden NFL ’95 was well received upon release due to its improved graphics compared to previous versions of the game as well as its realistic approach towards football strategy and tactics. The game was praised for its intuitive controls which allowed even novice players to quickly learn how to control their team without too much difficulty while still providing enough depth for experienced players looking for a challenge. Aside from minor technical issues related to slowdowns when too many sprites were present on screen at once, Madden NFL ’95 is generally considered one of the best American football games ever released for any system during that era.
