Rap Jam - Volume One is a game released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) in 1994. Developed by Realtime Associates and published by American Softworks Corporation, Rap Jam was one of the first hip-hop themed video games to be released on a console. The game features six playable characters, each with their own unique style of rap. Players can compete against one another or battle against the computer in an attempt to win the title of “Rap Master”.
The gameplay consists of two rounds, each round lasting three minutes. During each round, players must battle against one another through a series of rap battles that involve rhyming words and phrases as well as performing freestyle raps in order to gain points. The player who accumulates the most points at the end of both rounds wins the match and is crowned “Rap Master”. In addition to battling against other players, players can also choose to play various mini-games such as “Name That Tune” and “Scratch Attack” which involve matching samples from popular songs or scratching records using a special turntable controller that was sold separately from the game cartridge itself.
The visuals in Rap Jam are vibrant and colorful, featuring detailed sprites of the six playable characters along with various backgrounds based on real-life locations such as clubs and city streets. The soundtrack consists of over twenty original hip-hop tracks composed by Michael Bartlow and Rob Zombie (of White Zombie fame). Musically, Rap Jam stands out due to its mix of classic rap beats with more modern sounds such as electro house and funk.
Overall, Rap Jam - Volume One is an enjoyable experience for fans of hip-hop music looking for something different from traditional fighting games like Street Fighter II or Mortal Kombat. Its vibrant visuals, catchy soundtrack and simple yet engaging gameplay make it an excellent choice for anyone looking for some old school fun on their Super Nintendo Entertainment System console.
