PGA Tour 96 is a golf video game released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) in 1996. Developed by Sony Imagesoft and published by Electronic Arts, it was the first console version of a PGA Tour golf game. The game features five courses based on real-life locations: Pebble Beach, Oakmont Country Club, Sawgrass Country Club, TPC at Avenel and The Players Championship. It also features authentic PGA Tour players such as Fred Couples, Peter Jacobsen and Davis Love III.
The main menu of PGA Tour 96 allows the player to choose from four different modes of play: Tournament Play, Skins Game, Match Play and Practice Round. Tournament Play is the main single-player mode where the player can compete against computer-controlled opponents in an 18-hole tournament on one of the five courses. The Skins Game mode allows two players to compete against each other in a match where every hole has a monetary value attached to it that must be won by either player in order for them to be awarded the money for that hole; this mode supports both single-player and multiplayer gameplay. Match Play is similar to Skins Game but without any monetary values attached to each hole; this mode also supports both single-player and multiplayer gameplay. Lastly, Practice Round is exactly what it sounds like - allowing players to practice their golf skills without any pressure or competition involved; this mode only supports single-player gameplay.
Players are able to customize their own golfer before playing by choosing from several different physical characteristics such as height, weight and skin color as well as clothing items such as hats, shirts and shoes. Players are also able to control aspects of their golfer’s swing such as swing speed, club selection and power level. During actual gameplay, players have access to an overhead view of the course which shows all obstacles that need to be avoided or dealt with during each shot; these include sand traps, water hazards, trees and bunkers among others. Additionally there are various power-ups scattered around each course which can provide helpful boosts during gameplay including increased accuracy or distance for shots taken with specific clubs. Finally there are several camera angles available during play which allow for more precise aiming when lining up shots towards the green or putting on it; these include a first person view from behind the golfer as well as an overhead view of the entire course at once.
Overall PGA Tour 96 provides an enjoyable experience for anyone looking for a realistic golfing experience on their SNES console with several options available for customizing your own golfer and controlling how they play throughout each round of golf. With its detailed graphics depicting real-world courses and accurate depictions of famous professional golfers combined with its deep customization options and strategic elements found in other EA Sports titles make it worth checking out even today more than two decades after its release in 1996.
