Play Sonic CD Online
Sonic CD is a platform game developed and published by Sega for the Sega CD (Mega-CD) console. It was released in 1993 in Japan, 1994 in North America and Europe, and 1995 in Australia. The game follows Sonic the Hedgehog as he attempts to save an alien race called the Pachacamacs from Doctor Robotnik.
The game features two distinct styles of gameplay: traditional 2D side-scrolling levels, and 3D bonus stages. The main portion of the game consists of 12 levels divided into three zones each. Each zone has four acts, with a boss fight at the end of each act. Sonic's primary objective is to collect all seven Time Stones scattered throughout the levels before Robotnik does so he can save the Pachacamacs from enslavement. To do this, Sonic must travel through time by jumping into special TV sets located throughout the levels. Doing so allows him to travel between alternate versions of each level which take place in different time periods: past, present, and future. By altering objects in one version of a level, Sonic can affect its corresponding version in another period. For example, destroying all robots or badniks in a level's past will prevent them from appearing in its present or future iterations.
In addition to these main levels are 8 "special stages" which are accessed by collecting 50 rings or more and then jumping into a giant ring located somewhere within each zone's acts. These stages involve navigating through winding tunnels while collecting blue spheres along the way. Reaching the end of any special stage grants Sonic either a Time Stone or an extra life depending on how many blue spheres were collected during it.
Sonic CD also features several other unique elements such as hidden bonuses that can be found by destroying certain objects with specific techniques (such as spin dashing), secret rooms located behind walls that can be opened with certain techniques (like rolling off springs), and power ups that give Sonic various abilities like invincibility or increased speed for a limited time period if collected multiple times consecutively without being hit by enemies or obstacles along the way.
Overall, Sonic CD is considered one of the most innovative titles on its system due to its large variety of gameplay elements and its use of alternate versions of each level based on time period as well as its memorable soundtrack composed by Naofumi Hataya which features both new songs written specifically for this title as well as remixed versions of classic tunes from previous titles such as "Green Hill Zone" from Sonic 1 and "Star Light Zone" from Sonic 2 among others.
