Cadillacs and Dinosaurs: The Second Cataclysm is a Sega CD/Mega-CD side scrolling beat 'em up video game developed by Capcom and released in 1994. It is based on the comic book series Xenozoic Tales, which was written and illustrated by Mark Schultz. The game follows Jack Tenrec and Hannah Dundee, who are tasked with saving humanity from an evil race of aliens known as the Quetzalcoatl, who have unleashed a deadly cataclysm upon the world.
The game follows the same style of gameplay as its predecessor, Cadillacs and Dinosaurs (also known as Mustapha’s Revenge). Players take control of Jack or Hannah as they fight their way through eight levels filled with enemies. Along the way, they will encounter various bosses that must be defeated before progressing to the next stage. The character's primary weapons are their fists; however, they can also pick up various power-ups such as knives, bats, and guns which will help them in battle. The player's health is represented by a red bar at the top of the screen; if this bar reaches zero then it's game over.
The graphics in Cadillacs and Dinosaurs: The Second Cataclysm are much improved over its predecessor. The characters now appear larger onscreen and there is more detail in both the backgrounds and sprites. Additionally, the music has been completely remastered for this release making it sound much better than before.
The main goal of Cadillacs and Dinosaurs: The Second Cataclysm is to save humanity from extinction by defeating all eight bosses along with any regular enemies that stand in your way. Once you have completed each level you will gain access to new areas where you can find more powerful weapons to aid you in your quest against the Quetzalcoatl aliens. Additionally, at certain points throughout each level players will be presented with branching paths where they must choose between either completing a mini-game or continuing on with their mission; these mini-games range from puzzles to arcade-style shooting galleries which add an extra layer of fun to proceedings.
Overall, Cadillacs and Dinosaurs: The Second Cataclysm is an excellent side scrolling beat 'em up that improves upon its predecessor in almost every way; from improved graphics to enhanced audio plus more engaging boss fights this game should please fans of both sidescrolling action games as well as fans of Mark Schultz’s comic book series Xenozoic Tales alike.
