Night Trap is a full motion video game developed by Digital Pictures and released for the Sega CD/Mega-CD in 1992. It was one of the earliest full motion video games to be released, and was met with controversy due to its content. The game's premise revolves around five teenage girls attending a slumber party in a mansion owned by a retired actor. The player takes control of an unseen security guard watching their every move through infrared cameras.
The player must monitor the girls' movements throughout the house and activate traps whenever they are threatened by vampires known as Augers. The traps come in various forms such as doors that slam shut, floor panels that eject spikes, and beds that turn into cages. If the player fails to protect the girls from the Augers, they will be turned into vampires themselves.
The game also features multiple endings depending on how well the player performs during each playthrough. The most notable feature of Night Trap is its use of live actors instead of animation or computer graphics, which gives it an unique style compared to other games of its time.
Night Trap was met with mixed reviews upon release due to its violent content and exploitative nature towards women, which led it to become one of the first video games ever to be put under government scrutiny for possible censorship or regulation. Despite this, Night Trap has since gained cult status among fans due to its unique style and has been re-released multiple times throughout the years on different platforms such as PlayStation 2, Xbox 360, iOS devices and PC via digital distribution services like Steam.
