Lawnmower Man, The is a Sega CD game released in 1993. It is based on the 1992 movie of the same name starring Pierce Brosnan and Jeff Fahey. The game follows the plot of the movie and features an action-adventure style of gameplay.
The game begins with the main character Jobe Smith, played by Fahey, being held captive in an underground laboratory run by Dr. Angelo, played by Brosnan. Jobe has been subjected to virtual reality experiments which have given him superhuman powers. He must use these powers to escape from the lab and confront Angelo's sinister plans for world domination.
Players will explore a variety of 3D environments as they progress through the game. They can interact with objects in each scene and battle enemies using various weapons such as guns or swords. There are also puzzles to be solved along the way which require some strategic thinking in order to progress further into the game.
As players move through each level they will collect power-ups which give them access to new abilities such as increased speed or strength, or special weapons like grenades or lasers. These power-ups are essential for taking down tougher enemies and bosses that stand in Jobe's way during his escape from the lab.
Players can also make use of a variety of vehicles throughout the game, including tanks, helicopters and motorbikes which allow them to traverse terrain quickly and reach new areas faster than before. This adds an extra layer of strategy as players must decide when it is best to use vehicles over running or fighting their way through levels manually.
The graphics are impressive for a Sega CD title with detailed environments, characters and effects making up for its limited colour palette. The soundtrack is also fitting for the sci-fi theme with eerie synth melodies accompanying intense action sequences throughout each level adding tension and excitement to every situation encountered by Jobe during his daring escape attempt from Dr Angelo’s laboratory prison.
Overall Lawnmower Man: The Sega CD Version is an enjoyable experience that stays true to its source material while offering plenty of challenge along its varied levels and action packed set pieces all set within immersive 3D environments created specifically for this version of the game only available on Sega’s ill fated Mega-CD console system at time of release back in 1993..
