Timecop is a side-scrolling action game released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) in 1994. The game was developed and published by JVC Musical Industries and based on the movie of the same name.
The player takes control of Max Walker, a time traveling police officer from the year 2004 who is tasked with stopping the evil criminal mastermind, Bruno Loubet, from altering history to his own advantage. As Max, the player must travel through three different time periods: 1910s Paris, 1940s Germany and 1990s Hong Kong. In each era, he must fight off enemies such as robots, ninjas and gangsters while completing various tasks in order to progress through the game.
The gameplay in Timecop consists of two parts: platforming and combat. During platforming sections, Max can jump, climb ladders and swim to reach higher areas or to collect items such as coins or health power-ups. Combat sections involve Max fighting off enemies with either punches or kicks or using weapons such as guns or swords which can be found throughout the levels.
In addition to regular enemies, there are also boss fights at the end of each level which require more advanced strategies to defeat them. A time limit is also imposed on each level so it is important for players to complete their objectives quickly in order to progress further into the game.
Timecop has been praised for its detailed graphics and smooth animations as well as its varied gameplay which combines both platforming and combat elements. The sound design is also quite good with an upbeat soundtrack that fits perfectly with the fast-paced action of the game. Overall, Timecop is a great action game that fans of both platformers and fighting games should definitely check out!
