Desert Fighter is a top-down shooter style video game released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1992. The game was developed and published by Gamtec and was one of the first games to use the SNES’s Mode 7 technology, allowing for 3D graphics and scrolling backgrounds.
The goal of Desert Fighter is to defeat an evil army that has taken over a desert region in North Africa. Players take control of a lone fighter pilot who must battle across seven levels to reach the enemy’s stronghold. Along the way, players must face off against a variety of enemies, including tanks, planes, helicopters and infantry forces. The player’s plane is equipped with an unlimited supply of machine gun bullets and missiles which can be used to take out targets on land or in the air. In addition, power-ups are scattered throughout each level which can be collected to upgrade weapons or restore health.
Desert Fighter features two modes: Story Mode and Battle Mode. In Story Mode, players progress through each level while fighting off enemies until they reach their final destination; success is rewarded with a password that can be entered at the title screen to resume progress at any time. Battle Mode allows up to four players to compete against each other in a free-for-all deathmatch; this mode supports both single-player and multiplayer options via either link cable or split screen gameplay.
Desert Fighter has become somewhat of a cult classic amongst SNES fans due its unique blend of fast-paced action, challenging levels and smooth visuals that pushed the capabilities of the console’s hardware at the time. Despite its age, Desert Fighter still stands as an enjoyable shooter experience that continues to entertain gamers today.
