Romance of the Three Kingdoms is a turn-based strategy game released in 1988 for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). The game was developed by Koei and published by their North American subsidiary, Koei America Corporation. It was based on the Chinese historical novel of the same name written by Luo Guanzhong during the 14th century.

The game starts off with you choosing one of three forces: Shu, Wei, or Wu. Each force has its own unique strengths and weaknesses as well as different starting conditions. After selecting your force, you can choose from five scenarios: Unification, Rebellion, Warring States, Yellow Turban Rebellion, or Dynasty Warriors. Each scenario offers a different challenge and rewards for victory.

Once you have chosen your scenario and force, you begin the game in a turn-based format where you must manage your resources to achieve victory. You will need to build up an army and strategically move it around the map while also managing diplomatic relations with other forces. You will also need to construct fortifications to protect your cities from enemy attacks and make sure that they are adequately supplied with food and other resources.

In addition to managing your own forces, you must also take into account various events that can occur throughout the game such as natural disasters or rebellions which can affect both your own forces as well as those of your enemies. As you progress through each scenario different objectives will be presented such as capturing certain cities or conquering enemy forces until ultimately unifying all of China under one rule.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms is considered to be one of the best turn-based strategy games ever made for the NES platform due to its deep strategic gameplay combined with its immersive storyline based on historical events from ancient China. Its legacy has endured over time with many sequels being released over the years across multiple platforms including modern consoles such as PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
