Romance of the Three Kingdoms II is a turn-based strategy game released for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in 1988. Developed by Koei, it is based on Luo Guanzhong’s novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms and is the second installment in Koei’s long-running Three Kingdoms series. The game puts players in the shoes of a warlord during the tumultuous period of Chinese history known as the Three Kingdoms era. Players must make strategic decisions to expand their territory, build up their armies, and ultimately defeat their rivals to unify China under one ruler.

The game starts with players selecting from one of 12 starting warlords: Cao Cao, Liu Bei, Sun Jian, Yuan Shao, Gongsun Zan, Ma Teng, Han Sui, Zhang Yan, Zhang Lu, Liu Biao, Dong Zhuo and Yuan Shu. Each warlord has different starting stats and abilities that affect how they play. After selecting a warlord players can then start to conquer China by declaring war on other rival warlords or forming alliances with them. Players can also recruit officers to serve in their army and assign them to command posts in order to increase their effectiveness on the battlefield.

Gameplay consists of two distinct phases: political phase and combat phase. During the political phase players will be able to manage their kingdom by recruiting officers for their army or making diplomatic decisions such as forming alliances or declaring wars on rival kingdoms. During this phase players will also be able to purchase items or upgrade buildings which will give bonuses such as increased population growth or improved attack/defense capabilities. The combat phase involves sending out your army units into battle against enemy forces where you must use strategy and tactics to defeat them. If victorious you can gain control over enemy territories and resources which can benefit your kingdom’s development further down the line. Victory conditions include either conquering all other territories or achieving unification by having all other territories become part of your own unified nation through peaceful means such as diplomacy or marriage alliances.
