RoboCop for the Nintendo Entertainment System is a side-scrolling action/adventure game based on the popular 1987 sci-fi movie of the same name.
Developed by Ocean Software and released in 1988, it was one of the first games to feature a licensed property.
The game has become a cult classic, with many fans citing its difficulty as one of its primary charms.
The game takes place in the futuristic city of Detroit after a corporate takeover by OCP (Omni Consumer Products) has left it overrun with crime.
You take on the role of RoboCop, an indestructible cyborg police officer created by OCP to fight crime and protect citizens from evil forces.
Your mission is to defeat ED-209, an advanced robot created by OCP that has gone rogue and is wreaking havoc throughout the city.
In order to complete your mission you must traverse through five levels filled with enemies such as criminals, robots, and other assorted thugs.
As you progress through each level you will acquire weapons and power-ups such as armor upgrades, health packs, extra lives, and bonus points.
Additionally each level contains hidden items which can be collected for extra points or used to further upgrade RoboCop's arsenal.
RoboCop's controls are fairly simple; he can shoot his gun in four directions (up, down, left and right), jump and crouch when needed.
He also has access to special abilities such as being able to fire multiple shots at once or unleash powerful blasts of energy which can destroy obstacles or enemies around him.
Additionally there are several mini-games scattered throughout each level which allow you to gain extra points or lives depending on how well you perform them.
Graphically RoboCop looks quite good for an 8-bit game; most of the sprites are detailed enough to make them easily recognizable while still retaining a certain charm that comes with all NES titles.
The music is also quite good; while it may not be as iconic as some other games from this era it still manages to set an appropriate mood for each level without becoming too repetitive or annoying.
Overall RoboCop is a great title for any fan of classic side scrolling action/adventures; its challenging gameplay combined with its memorable characters makes it stand out even today among similar titles from that era.
It may not be perfect but it certainly deserves its status as a cult favorite amongst retro gamers everywhere!
