RoboCop 2 is a 1990 side-scrolling action game released for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). It was developed by Data East and published by Ocean Software. The game is based on the 1990 film of the same name, which was itself based on the 1987 film RoboCop.
In RoboCop 2, players take control of the titular cyborg police officer as he battles his way through a crime-ridden future Detroit in an attempt to restore law and order. The game has six levels, each with its own unique theme and enemies. Players will encounter robotic adversaries such as ED-209, Cain’s gang members, and even OCP executives throughout their journey. Numerous weapons can be collected along the way to help RoboCop defeat his foes. These include a handgun, machine gun, flamethrower, grenades, missiles, and a powerful plasma cannon. Additionally, several power-ups can be found which provide temporary invincibility or increased firepower.
RoboCop 2 features a password system that allows players to save their progress at any time during their playthrough. This is especially helpful when tackling some of the game’s more difficult sections. The graphics are well detailed and offer an authentic representation of the movie’s universe. The soundtrack also captures the atmosphere of RoboCop’s world perfectly with its selection of synthesized techno tunes.
Overall, RoboCop 2 offers a challenging yet rewarding experience for NES fans looking for an action-packed platformer from days gone by. With its interesting level design and wide variety of weapons to choose from, it remains one of the best examples of how to successfully adapt a movie into an 8-bit video game.
