New Zealand Story, The is a classic side-scrolling platformer released for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in 1989. Developed by Taito Corporation and published by Ocean Software, the game follows the adventures of a young kiwi bird named Tiki as he attempts to save his friends from the clutches of an evil leopard seal known as Wally.
The game takes place in a fantasy version of New Zealand. As the player progresses through each level, they are presented with various obstacles and enemies that must be overcome before progressing on to the next stage. The levels are populated by numerous enemies such as seagulls, rabbits, and hedgehogs, all of which must be avoided or defeated in order to progress. Along the way, special items can be collected that will help Tiki complete his mission. These include bombs, parachutes, and umbrellas that can be used to traverse long distances or reach otherwise inaccessible areas.
The gameplay of New Zealand Story is fairly straightforward: move left and right while jumping over obstacles and defeating enemies. In addition to this basic formula, there are several other elements added to mix up the action. For instance, there are sections where Tiki can ride a balloon or a submarine in order to progress through levels faster than on foot. There are also bonus stages where players can collect extra points by shooting at targets or picking up items hidden around the level.
New Zealand Story is an enjoyable experience that provides plenty of challenge while still being accessible enough for players of any skill level to enjoy it. Its colorful visuals and iconic soundtrack make it one of the most recognizable games from its era and it has since become a beloved classic among NES fans worldwide.
