At the end of each world lies a boss battle against one of four evil bosses who must be defeated before progressing onto the next world. In addition to these worlds, there is also a secret ninth world containing even more difficult levels and bosses that can be accessed after completing all eight main worlds.

Hudson’s Adventure Island was well-received upon release due to its vibrant graphics and challenging gameplay. The soundtrack was composed by renowned Japanese composer Shogo Sakai whose work would go on to influence many future games including Street Fighter II for SNES and Sonic CD for Sega CD. The game was later released for other platforms such as Game Boy Advance (GBA) in 2003 and Virtual Console for Wii U in 2014 allowing fans old and new alike to experience this classic platformer anew.
