The classic 1984 film Ghostbusters has been a fan favorite for decades, and its iconic theme song is recognized by generations of moviegoers. The film spawned an animated series, several video games, and even a 2020 remake. One of the most memorable video game adaptations of the franchise is the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) version released in 1988.
This 8-bit adaptation of Ghostbusters was developed by HAL Laboratory and published by Activision. It was one of the first video games to feature licensed characters from a popular movie and has since become a cult classic among retro gamers. The game follows the adventures of Peter Venkman, Ray Stanz, Egon Spengler, and Winston Zeddemore as they battle demonic forces in New York City. Players must traverse five levels based on locations from the movie such as the Sedgewick Hotel and the Firehouse headquarters.
Players control one of the four Ghostbusters at a time while switching between them to tackle different obstacles throughout each level. The gameplay is similar to that of other NES platformers where players must jump over enemies and obstacles while collecting power-ups along the way. Each character also has their own unique weapons such as Peter’s Proton Pack or Ray’s Slime Blower which are used to defeat enemies like ghosts, ghouls, and slimer. As players progress through each level they must avoid getting slimed or zapped by ghosts until they reach the boss at the end who must be defeated in order to complete each stage.
The graphics in this NES version are surprisingly detailed considering its 8-bit limitations with colorful sprites depicting characters from the movie accurately along with various enemies like Stay Puft Marshmallow Man or Slimer from The Real Ghostbusters cartoon show. The music soundtrack consists mostly of sound samples taken from both movies which add to its nostalgic charm.
Ghostbusters for NES is a fun and challenging platformer that captures much of what made this classic movie so beloved by fans worldwide. Although it may not be quite as polished as some later games in the series it still manages to capture much of what makes Ghostbusters so special with its iconic characters, settings, music, and humor all present in this 8-bit version for NES systems everywhere!
