New Ghostbusters II is a 1989 video game based on the popular film franchise of the same name. It was released for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) and developed by HAL Laboratory Inc. The game follows the same plot as the movie, with players controlling the four Ghostbusters (Peter Venkman, Ray Stantz, Egon Spengler and Winston Zeddemore) as they attempt to save New York City from an evil ghostly menace.
The game starts off in a museum where you must battle through various enemies such as ghosts, monsters and robots before reaching the end. Once at the end, players must face off against Vigo The Carpathian, a powerful villain from another dimension who is attempting to take over New York City. After defeating Vigo, players are then taken to his castle where they must battle their way through more enemies before coming face-to-face with him again. Players must use their proton packs to stop Vigo once and for all and save New York City.
Players can also choose to play as one of four different characters; each character has its own unique abilities which can be used in battle. Peter Venkman is strong but slow while Ray Stantz has higher agility but weaker attack power. Egon Spengler focuses on using scientific knowledge in order to defeat enemies while Winston Zeddemore relies on raw strength and courage. Each character also has access to special items such as Proton Packs or Ghost Traps which can be used in battle against enemies or bosses.
The levels are split up into eight stages; each stage features different environments such as sewers, city streets and haunted houses filled with various enemies that must be defeated before progress can be made. As you progress through each stage you will find new items that can be used to help defeat tougher enemies or solve puzzles along the way. Players will also encounter bosses at certain points throughout the game which need to be defeated in order for progress to be made.
The visuals of New Ghostbusters II are simple yet effective; colourful sprites represent both heroes and villains alike while detailed backgrounds showcase different locations around New York City such as Central Park or Times Square. The music is catchy and fitting with each stage having its own unique theme song that fits perfectly with what’s happening on screen at any given time; this adds an extra layer of atmosphere during some of the more intense battles or boss fights.
Overall, New Ghostbusters II is an enjoyable action platformer that captures much of what makes the original movie so great; it’s fun for both fans of the franchise and gamers alike looking for a challenge that doesn’t take itself too seriously whilst still providing plenty of thrills along the way!
