Yuu Yuu Hakusho II is a fighting video game released on the Sega Game Gear in 1993. The game is based on the popular Japanese manga and anime series of the same name, which follows the adventures of Yusuke Urameshi, a young delinquent who dies while attempting to save a child and is subsequently brought back to life by Koenma, the son of King Yama.
The game follows the plot of the anime series closely, allowing players to play as Yusuke and his friends as they battle against various enemies in order to save the human world from destruction. The main characters are able to use their special techniques such as Spirit Gun, Reigan and Genkai's Barrier techniques in order to defeat their opponents. Players can also collect power-ups throughout the game which will increase their character’s strength and abilities.
The gameplay is similar to other fighting games where players must battle against multiple opponents at once using various attacks and combos. The levels are varied with different stages such as forests, mountains, deserts and cities all featuring unique enemies with different attack patterns. As players progress through each stage they will encounter tougher enemies and bosses which require more skillful tactics in order to defeat them.
Yuu Yuu Hakusho II features three difficulty levels for players of all skill levels; novice mode for beginners, advanced mode for those looking for more challenging fights, and expert mode for experienced fighters. Additionally there are two modes of play; story mode which follows Yusuke’s journey through Makai (the spirit world) or tournament mode which allows up to four players to compete against one another.
The graphics in Yuu Yuu Hakusho II are quite basic but still manage to capture some of the atmosphere from the anime series with its colorful backgrounds and characters being well represented on screen. The music is also fitting with several tracks from both TV episodes included in this version of the game.
Overall Yuu Yuu Hakusho II is an enjoyable fighting game that captures some of the spirit from its source material while providing an entertaining challenge for anyone who picks it up. With its easy-to-learn controls, multiple difficulty levels and two modes of play it offers something for everyone whether you’re a fan of the anime or just looking for a fun fighting experience on your Game Gear console.
