As he progresses through each stage, Shikinjou must defeat bosses before being able to move on to the next stage.

Players can choose from four different characters: Shikinjou, Goro, Momo, and Chibi. Each character has their own unique abilities and attacks which can be used against opponents in order to win battles. The VS mode also features special items such as bombs and shurikens which can be used to gain an advantage over opponents during fights.

The graphics of Shikinjou are quite impressive for its time period; the backgrounds are detailed and colorful while the sprites are well animated. The music is composed by Mecano Associates who have created some memorable tunes for other games such as Street Fighter II and OutRunners.
