Shanghai II is a classic puzzle game released for the Sega Game Gear in 1993. Developed and published by Activision, the game is based on the popular Chinese tile-matching solitaire game of the same name. In Shanghai II, players must match tiles by selecting two that are identical or adjacent to each other on the board. The aim of the game is to clear all of the tiles from the board before time runs out.
The game features three different play modes – Classic, Puzzle and Time Attack. Classic mode allows players to take their time in clearing tiles from board, while Puzzle mode gives them a set amount of time to complete each level. Finally, Time Attack mode challenges players to complete levels as quickly as possible, with bonus points awarded for completing levels quickly.
Shanghai II also features an array of power-ups which can be used to help clear more tiles from the board faster. These include bombs, which will clear a 3x3 area around it when activated; lightning bolts which will clear all matching tiles on the board; and wildcards which can be matched with any tile on the board. Additionally, special bonus items such as clocks or coins can appear when certain conditions are met during gameplay.
The visuals in Shanghai II are vibrant and detailed, with attractive backgrounds and colourful tile designs making up each level’s layout. The soundtrack is upbeat and catchy too, adding further atmosphere to each level. Overall, Shanghai II is an enjoyable puzzle game that still holds up today despite its age – perfect for those looking for some classic gaming fun.
