Bust-A-Move is a puzzle game developed by Taito and released in 1994 for the Sega Game Gear. The game was initially released in Japan under the name Puzzle Bobble and was later released in the United States as Bust-A-Move. The game quickly became popular due to its simple yet addictive gameplay and colorful visuals.
The objective of Bust-A-Move is to clear a set number of bubbles from the screen before they reach the bottom. Players control a bubble launcher located at the bottom of the screen, with which they can fire bubbles up towards clusters of colored bubbles that are suspended from the top of the screen. When three or more bubbles of the same color are connected, they will pop, eliminating them from play and potentially causing other bubbles to fall off the screen. Players must strategically aim their shots so that they can match colors and clear away as many bubbles as possible before their launcher runs out of ammo or their time runs out.
Bust-A-Move features several different modes of play including Arcade Mode, Time Attack Mode, Challenge Mode, VS Mode, and Puzzle Mode. In Arcade Mode players must clear all bubbles on each level before progressing to the next one while in Time Attack Mode they must try to clear each level within a certain amount of time. Challenge mode features 50 unique levels with various obstacles such as walls and conveyor belts while VS mode allows two players to compete against each other using two linked Game Gears. Finally, Puzzle mode is an unlockable single player mode where players must complete special puzzles by clearing all bubbles on a single board within a given amount of time limit.
Bust-A-Move has remained popular over time due to its simple yet challenging gameplay mechanics and colorful visuals which make it an enjoyable experience for both casual gamers and hardcore puzzle fans alike. It also remains one of Sega's most successful titles for its Game Gear console with many ports being released for various platforms over the years including Nintendo DS, Xbox Live Arcade, iOS devices, Android devices, PlayStation Network, Steam, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch.
