Mortal Kombat 3 is a fighting video game developed and released by Midway Games for the Sega Game Gear in 1995. It is a port of the popular arcade game of the same name, and was followed by an updated version, Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3. The game features seven playable characters from the Mortal Kombat series, including Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Sonya Blade, Jax Briggs, Kung Lao, Kitana, and Shang Tsung. Additionally, it includes three secret characters (Ermac, Reptile and Smoke). The objective of the game is to defeat all opponents using various attacks to deplete their health bar before they can do the same to you.
The gameplay of Mortal Kombat 3 remains largely unchanged from its arcade counterpart. Players select one of seven fighters and battle against computer-controlled opponents or another player in a best-of-three match. Each fighter has their own unique set of moves that can be used to attack their opponent as well as special moves that are performed by inputting specific button combinations. Additionally, each character has two fatalities that can be used to finish off their opponent once they have been defeated.
Mortal Kombat 3 also features several single player modes such as “Endurance” where the player must defeat multiple opponents in succession without losing any rounds; “Practice” which allows players to hone their skills; and “Tower” which consists of 10 levels with increasing difficulty culminating in a fight against Shao Kahn himself. In addition to these modes are several mini-games such as “Test Your Might” where players must press buttons quickly enough to break objects; “Test Your Sight” where they must identify hidden objects; and “Test Your Luck” where they must guess which object will appear next on screen.
The visuals for Mortal Kombat 3 on Sega Game Gear remain largely faithful to its arcade counterpart with detailed sprites representing each character. The backgrounds also feature vibrant colors while maintaining a dark atmosphere befitting of the series' trademark gory violence. Additionally, the music retains its signature techno/rock feel with some tracks being remixed specifically for this release.
Overall, Mortal Kombat 3 on Sega Game Gear proves itself to be an excellent port of the original arcade classic with its solid gameplay mechanics and faithful visuals making for an enjoyable experience both solo or with friends alike.
