Majors Pro Baseball, The (MPB) is a baseball game released for the Sega Game Gear in 1994. Developed and published by Sega, MPB was one of the few baseball games available for the Game Gear at the time. It features a two-player mode, allowing two players to compete against each other using either a single system or two systems linked via cable.
MPB offers three distinct playing modes: Exhibition, League Play, and All-Star Play. In Exhibition mode, players can choose from four teams (the Braves, Cubs, Padres and Mets) as they face off in a single game. Players can customize their team's lineup before the start of each game. League Play is similar to Exhibition mode but allows players to participate in an entire season with multiple teams. All-Star Play is a tournament mode that pits players against all four teams in a series of nine games.
The gameplay in MPB follows traditional baseball rules with some minor modifications to fit within the confines of the Game Gear hardware. Players can select from several batting stances including left-handed or right-handed hitters as well as batting power which affects how far balls are hit off the bat. Pitching options include selecting pitch type (fastball or curveball), direction (inside or outside), and speed (slow or fast). Fielding is done using an overhead view of the field where players must move their fielder towards the ball while trying to avoid opposing base runners.
MPB also includes some extra features such as detailed statistical tracking and instant replay which allow players to review their best plays after they've been recorded by the game's internal memory feature. Additionally, if two systems are linked together via cable then both players will be able to play simultaneously on separate screens with no lag issues whatsoever. Finally, MPB also includes an audio track containing various sound effects and background music that add atmosphere to the game's presentation.
Overall Majors Pro Baseball for Sega Game Gear is an excellent baseball simulation that offers plenty of depth and challenge for fans of America’s pastime looking for an enjoyable experience on their portable gaming device. With its three different playing modes, customizable team lineups, detailed statistical tracking and instant replay options it’s easy to see why this title has remained popular among retro gamers over the years despite its age and lack of modern graphical fidelity compared to more recent titles on other platforms like Xbox One or PlayStation 4.
