Jurassic Park is a side-scrolling action-adventure video game developed by BlueSky Software and published by Sega for the Game Gear handheld console in 1993. It is based on the Steven Spielberg film of the same name, which was released in June 1993. The game's plot follows that of the movie, with players taking control of Dr. Alan Grant as he attempts to escape Isla Nublar while rescuing other survivors from dinosaurs and other hazards.
The game consists of seven levels, each set in a different area of Isla Nublar. Players must traverse through each level while avoiding and fighting off dinosaurs and other hazards, such as lava pits and electric fences. Along the way, players can collect items such as weapons, health packs and ammunition to help them progress through each level more easily. In order to complete each level, players must reach a designated exit point without being killed by enemies or running out of health points.
Gameplay mechanics are relatively simple; players move around using either the d-pad or joystick controller while pressing buttons to fire weapons or use items they have collected throughout the level. The player's health is displayed at the top left corner of the screen, with several hearts representing how much life they have remaining before they die; if all hearts are lost then it’s game over. As well as this, there are several bonus stages throughout the game which can be accessed if certain conditions are met within each level; these bonus stages often reward players with extra lives or power ups which can be used to their advantage later on in the game.
Graphically speaking, Jurassic Park for Game Gear looks quite good for a handheld system from 1993; sprites are detailed and well animated, backgrounds look nice too but could do with some more colour variety in places (as many areas tend to look very similar), and overall everything is presented pretty well - though due to hardware restrictions there is no sound or music present in this version of Jurassic Park (unlike its Genesis counterpart).
Overall Jurassic Park for Game Gear is an enjoyable action-adventure title that does a great job at recreating its source material - despite some minor graphical issues here and there. If you're looking for an entertaining romp through dinosaur-infested islands then this one should definitely suit your needs - just be sure to stock up on plenty of ammo before you head out!
