Ariel - The Little Mermaid is a side-scrolling action game developed by Sega and released for the Game Gear in 1992.
The game follows the story of Disney's classic 1989 animated film, The Little Mermaid, which follows Ariel, a mermaid princess who dreams of becoming human. In this game, players take control of Ariel on her quest to transform into a human. Players will explore levels full of enemies such as seagulls, crabs, eels and other aquatic creatures while also avoiding obstacles like rocks and whirlpools. Along the way, Ariel can collect items such as air bubbles to extend her air supply and pearls that increase her score.
The gameplay is divided into two parts: swimming and walking. When swimming, players can use the directional pad to move left or right in order to avoid obstacles or enemies while collecting items. They can also press buttons to perform special moves such as diving deeper underwater or leaping out of the water to catch airborne items. As for walking segments, players must make their way through various stages by jumping from platform to platform while avoiding enemies and collecting items.
Throughout each level there are bonus areas where players can collect extra lives or power ups that allow them to do things like shoot bubbles at enemies or freeze them in place temporarily. There are also boss battles which require players to dodge enemy attacks while shooting back with bubbles until they have defeated the boss.
Ariel - The Little Mermaid is a fun and challenging game that gives players an opportunity to relive one of Disney's most beloved movies in video game form. With its colorful visuals and catchy soundtrack, this game still stands as one of Sega's most iconic titles for the Game Gear console.
