Gear Works is a Sega Game Gear game released in 1991. It is a puzzle-platformer game set in an industrial factory. The player takes control of the robot character, Gear, and must navigate their way through the levels to reach the end goal.
The objective of the game is to collect all of the gear pieces scattered throughout each level. The gear pieces can be found in various locations, such as inside boxes and by destroying enemies. Once all of the gear pieces are collected, they will combine to form a large gear which will open up access to the next level. Along with collecting gear pieces, there are also coins scattered around which can be collected for bonus points.
The levels are filled with obstacles that must be navigated in order to progress. These obstacles include conveyor belts, spikes, crushers and more. There are also enemies that must be avoided or destroyed in order to progress safely. The player has access to several weapons which can be used against these enemies such as missiles and lasers.
Throughout each level there are also bonus stages which can provide additional points or power ups if completed successfully. These bonus stages involve tasks such as shooting targets or navigating mazes within a certain time limit.
The graphics in Gear Works are fairly basic but still quite effective for its time period with bright colours and detailed sprites being used for both characters and environments alike. The music is also quite catchy and upbeat, providing an enjoyable backdrop to the action on screen.
Overall Gear Works is an enjoyable puzzle-platformer experience with plenty of challenge and replayability due to its varied levels and bonus stages. It’s simple yet effective gameplay makes it easy enough for newcomers while still providing a decent challenge for those looking for something more advanced from their gaming experience.
