Lemmings is a puzzle-platformer video game released in 1993 on the Sega Game Gear. It is the first game in the Lemmings series and was developed by DMA Design and published by Psygnosis. The objective of the game is to guide a group of lemmings through various levels, avoiding dangers and guiding them to the exit.
The game starts off with a group of lemmings in an area known as the “Lemmingland”. The player must guide these lemmings safely to their destination by using different tools given to them throughout each level. These tools include digging, building bridges, and blocking off areas to prevent lemmings from walking into danger. The player can also assign certain tasks (such as digging or blocking) to individual lemmings so that they can complete their goals more efficiently.
The levels are divided into four distinct worlds: Meadow, Caves, Snowy Mountain and Skyworld. Each world contains several levels with increasing difficulty, featuring traps such as spikes, fire pits, waterfalls and more. There are also bonus levels which require special skills such as swimming or flying to complete them.
The player must complete each level within a certain time frame while also ensuring that enough lemmings reach the exit before time runs out. If all lemmings die before reaching the exit then the level has failed and must be restarted from the beginning. Additionally, if too many lemmings reach their destination then they will start celebrating (known as “lemminging”) which will cause them to run around randomly until all of them have been rescued or killed off by hazards in the environment.
The game also features two-player mode where two players can compete against each other on split screen levels or take turns playing through single player levels together co-operatively with one another. This mode allows for extra strategy when attempting to complete levels quickly since players can plan ahead for both themselves and their opponents simultaneously.
Overall, Lemmings is an enjoyable puzzle-platformer for up to two players that requires quick thinking and strategic planning in order to successfully navigate its increasingly difficult levels while rescuing enough lemmings from harm’s way before time runs out!
