Battletoads is a side-scrolling beat ‘em up game released for the Sega Game Gear in 1992. It is the sequel to the popular NES game Battletoads, and was developed by Rareware and published by Tradewest. The game follows the three toad protagonists, Rash, Zitz, and Pimple, as they battle their way through seven levels of enemies in order to rescue their kidnapped friends from the Dark Queen.
The game mechanics are similar to those found in other side-scrolling beat ‘em ups of the time. Players take control of one of the three toads and make their way through a level while beating up enemies with punches and kicks. Each character has their own set of moves that can be used against foes. In addition, players can pick up items such as bats, whips, shields, and more to help them along their journey. As the player progresses through each level they will encounter various bosses which must be defeated before continuing on.
The graphics for Battletoads are quite impressive for a Game Gear title. All characters have detailed animations that look great on the small screen. The backgrounds are colorful and varied between levels; some take place in outer space while others occur underwater or on land. The music throughout is cheerful and catchy, adding an extra layer of fun to the gameplay experience.
Battletoads offers an enjoyable challenge for fans of classic beat ‘em ups. With its colorful graphics and catchy soundtrack it stands out among other titles on the system. It's easy enough for beginners but still presents a difficult challenge for more experienced players who want to try out all of its features. Whether you’re a fan of classic beat ‘em ups or just looking for something new to play on your Game Gear; Battletoads is worth checking out!
