Hook is a platformer video game developed by Eurocom and published by Sega for the Sega Game Gear in 1992. The game is based on the 1991 film of the same name, which starred Robin Williams as Peter Banning, an adult who must rescue his children from Captain Hook.
The game begins with Peter Banning arriving at Neverland Island to rescue his two children, Jack and Maggie, who were kidnapped by Captain Hook. Players must guide Peter through six levels of action-adventure gameplay while battling enemies such as pirates and mermaids. Each level contains obstacles like ladders, rope swings and rafts that need to be navigated in order to progress further into the game. As well as enemies, there are also helpful characters such as Tinkerbell who can offer advice or items that aid Peter in his quest.
In each level players will have to collect various items that are scattered throughout the environment such as keys, coins or gems in order to progress further into the game. These items can be used to open doors or access secret areas which contain bonus points or extra lives. There are also power-ups which can help Peter defeat enemies more easily or give him temporary invincibility from harm.
As well as traditional platforming stages there are also mini-games in Hook which involve activities like sword fighting with Captain Hook’s crew or flying around on a broomstick avoiding obstacles and collecting coins. At certain points during gameplay players will also be able to take control of Peter’s children Jack and Maggie in order to complete tasks such as rescuing other kidnapped children from Captain Hook’s shipwrecked island fortress.
Hook was praised for its colorful visuals and soundtrack along with its innovative mix of platforming and mini-game elements which made it stand out from other games on the Game Gear at the time. Although it was a commercial success upon release it has since been overshadowed by more popular titles for the system such as Sonic The Hedgehog 2 and Mortal Kombat 3. Nevertheless, Hook remains a fondly remembered title amongst fans of classic Sega games due to its unique blend of action-adventure gameplay elements taken from both the movie source material and traditional platformers at the time.
