Populous II: Trials of the Olympian Gods is a classic Super Nintendo game released by Bullfrog Productions in 1992. It is the second installment in the Populous series, and it builds upon the success of its predecessor with new features and improved graphics. The goal of Populous II is to become the most powerful god in ancient Greece, by gathering followers and using their powers to defeat other gods.
Players begin as a newly appointed god, chosen to take on the Trials of the Olympian Gods. A tutorial introduces players to the basics of controlling their followers, building structures and casting spells. As they progress through each level, players must use their abilities to gain more followers and build up an army that can conquer rival gods. They will also need to build monuments and other structures in order to please their followers and gain favor with other gods.
The game’s main map consists of several islands connected by bridges. At each island, there are villages inhabited by human tribes who have been influenced by the rival gods. Players must conquer these villages in order to gain control over them, as well as collect resources such as gold and food which are necessary for building up an army.
Players can also cast spells in order to benefit themselves or hinder their opponents. Spells range from summoning tornadoes or floods, creating earthquakes or lightning strikes, manipulating natural disasters, sending plague among enemies’ populations or even resurrecting dead soldiers as zombies under one’s control.
The game features a wide array of characters including heroes like Hercules, Medusa, Cyclops and Centaurs which can be used as allies against enemy deities; mythical creatures like Minotaurs and Harpies; and powerful Titans who can help players dominate entire islands if they are willing to pay a hefty price for their services.
Populous II: Trials of the Olympian Gods provides hours of fun for strategy fans looking for a challenge that requires both careful planning and quick reflexes in order to succeed. With its unique blend of real-time strategy elements combined with RPG elements like character development and spell-casting abilities, it remains one of the most beloved games from this era of gaming history
