Batman Returns is a side-scrolling action game produced by Konami and released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) in 1993. The game was based on the 1992 film of the same name, which starred Michael Keaton as Batman. In the game, players take control of Batman as he attempts to stop the Penguin's plan to take over Gotham City.
The game consists of seven levels set in various locations throughout Gotham City. The first level takes place in a park, where Batman must confront several thugs and defeat their leader, Max Shreck. Other levels include a train station, an underground sewer system, and a rooftop chase sequence with Catwoman. Each level culminates in a boss battle against one of the film's antagonists such as the Red Triangle Circus Gang or Shreck himself.
The gameplay is typical of most side-scrolling action games from that era: players move Batman around using the D-pad and attack enemies using B to jump and A to punch or use weapons like batarangs or bolas. As Batman defeats enemies, he collects items such as health packs and upgrades for his weapons that are necessary for progressing through each level.
In addition to its single-player mode, Batman Returns also features two-player cooperative play via link cable connection between two SNES systems. This allows two players to work together to complete each level by sharing weapons and power-ups while taking turns playing as either Batman or Robin.
Overall, Batman Returns is considered one of the best licensed games ever released for the SNES due to its excellent graphics and sound design that capture the look and feel of Tim Burton’s iconic movie adaptation perfectly. It is also praised for its challenging yet entertaining gameplay that makes it an enjoyable experience for both casual gamers and hardcore fans alike.
