ABC Monday Night Football for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) was a classic game released in 1994 by Acclaim Entertainment. Developed by Iguana Entertainment and Visual Concepts, this game was the first football title to be released on the SNES console and it featured full-motion video and digitized graphics. The game also included an innovative play editor that allowed players to create their own plays and strategies.
The game featured 28 NFL teams with all of the players having their own stats and abilities, as well as 30 stadiums with different weather conditions. It also had play-by-play commentary provided by Al Michaels and Dan Dierdorf, who were both part of ABC’s Monday Night Football broadcast team at the time. The soundtrack for the game featured music from popular groups such as Van Halen, Aerosmith, Guns N' Roses, Bon Jovi, Def Leppard and many more.
The gameplay itself was very realistic, with a variety of offensive and defensive plays available to choose from. Players could choose between running or passing plays or even use trick plays such as flea flickers or fake punts. The AI opponents were quite challenging as they reacted realistically to player’s movements on the field. The game also had a range of difficulty levels so even novice players could enjoy playing against sophisticated AI opponents.
In addition to its single-player mode, ABC Monday Night Football also had a two-player mode where friends could compete against each other in head-to-head matches. This mode allowed for up to four people to join in on the action at once which made it great for parties or family gatherings.
Overall ABC Monday Night Football for SNES was an enjoyable experience that managed to capture the excitement of American football perfectly with its realistic graphics and sound effects combined with easy yet challenging gameplay mechanics. It is still regarded today as one of the best football titles ever released on any console and its legacy lives on in later iterations such as Madden NFL Football for Playstation 2/3/4 and Xbox 360/One consoles.
