The Euro Football Champ Super Nintendo game was released in 1994 and is a football simulation for the popular 16-bit console. The game was developed by KID and published by Vic Tokai. It was released in Europe, North America and Japan.
The game features two modes of play; Exhibition Mode, where you can play a single match against either the computer or another human player; and Tournament Mode, where you try to win the European Cup. In both modes, you can select from one of twelve international teams; England, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, Denmark, Czech Republic, Poland, Greece and Portugal. The graphics are quite good for a Super Nintendo game with each team having distinctive jerseys and faces for the players.
The gameplay is based on traditional football rules with some slight changes to adhere to the console's limitations. There are two halves of 30 minutes each with a 5 minute half time break in between. The game also has a penalty shoot-out mode which is activated if the score is tied at fulltime. You can choose whether your team plays offensively or defensively depending on the situation and passes can be made with various degrees of power.
In addition to basic football skills such as passing and shooting there are also special moves that can be used when close enough to goal such as slide tackles and bicycle kicks which add an extra layer of depth to the gameplay experience. A “Super Shot” move can also be used which increases your chances of scoring but requires precise timing for it to be effective.
The sound effects in Euro Football Champ are fairly basic but suitably match up with what’s happening on screen such as cheering from the crowd when goals are scored or booing when fouls are committed. Music during matches consists mainly of upbeat tunes that fit well with the action taking place on screen although some may find them repetitive after prolonged playing sessions.
Overall Euro Football Champ Super Nintendo provides an enjoyable gaming experience that captures many aspects of real life football while still being easy enough for newcomers to pick up without too much difficulty. Its simple control scheme allows players to quickly get into matches while its various special moves add an extra degree of challenge for those looking for something more than just passing and shooting
