FIFA 98 - Road to World Cup is a football game released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1998. It was developed and published by Electronic Arts (EA). The game was part of the FIFA series, which has been running since 1993.
The game featured a campaign mode where players could work their way up from club teams to international sides, eventually competing for the coveted World Cup trophy. The campaign was split into two sections: Club and International. In Club mode, players would play as one of six European teams in a league format against other club sides from Europe. After winning the league title, they would proceed to the International section where they could choose from any of the 32 qualifying national teams to compete in the World Cup tournament. As well as playing through matches, there were also minigames such as penalty shootouts and free kicks which added an extra layer of challenge and replayability.
The graphics in FIFA 98 - Road to World Cup were quite advanced for its time and featured full 3D player models rendered with realistic textures, animations and facial expressions. The environments were also rendered in 3D, with detailed stadiums and crowds adding to the atmosphere during matches. The sound effects were also impressive with accurate sound samples for crowd reactions, ball movement and commentary from real-life commentators providing a sense of authenticity that had never been seen before in a football game at this point.
In terms of gameplay, FIFA 98 - Road to World Cup offered both arcade-style action as well as more complex tactical options allowing players to control every aspect of their team’s performance on the pitch including formation changes, substitutions and set pieces. Players could also customize their team’s kit colors as well as individual player attributes such as speed and shooting power giving them additional control over how their team performs on match day.
Overall FIFA 98 – Road To World Cup was a great entry into the long running FIFA series with improved graphics, sound design and gameplay compared to its predecessors making it one of the best football games available on 16-bit consoles at that time period.
