Legend of Kage, The is an action-adventure game developed and published by Taito for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). It was released in Japan on April 27, 1985. It is the first game in the Kage series and has been followed up with two sequels, Legend of Kage 2 and Kage no Densetsu: The Demon Darkness.
The game follows the story of a young ninja named Kunoichi as he sets out to save Princess Kiri from an evil shogun. Kunoichi must traverse through five stages in order to reach his goal. Each stage consists of several levels in which Kunoichi must battle enemies, collect power-ups, and find hidden items along the way. At the end of each stage is a boss battle which must be won before proceeding to the next stage.
The gameplay is similar to other side scrolling action games of its time. Players control Kunoichi as he runs and jumps across platforms while battling enemies with his sword or throwing stars. He can also use special techniques such as wall jumping and double jumping to reach higher areas or dodge attacks from enemies. As players progress through each stage they will be able to upgrade their weapons and abilities by collecting power-ups scattered throughout each level.
The Legend of Kage was well received upon its release due to its challenging gameplay, colorful graphics, and catchy soundtrack. It has since become a cult classic among NES fans due to its unique gameplay mechanics which set it apart from other action games at the time. The game is also highly sought after among collectors due to its rarity and nostalgic appeal.
Although The Legend of Kage was never released outside Japan it has been featured in multiple compilations including Taito Legends 2 for PlayStation 2 and Xbox (2006) and Taito Memories II Gekan for PlayStation Portable (2008). In addition, it has been re-released on Virtual Console for Wii (2007) and Wii U (2013). Despite never receiving an official English release, there have been numerous fan translations available online allowing players around the world to experience this classic NES title.
