Hydlide is an action role-playing game developed by Nihon Falcom and published by ASCII Entertainment Software in 1984 for the Nintendo Entertainment System.

The game was released in Japan on December 6, 1984 and later in the United States on August 1985.

It is one of the earliest examples of an open world game, allowing the player to explore a vast world with non-linear progression.

The story of Hydlide follows a young knight named Jim who must save Princess Anne from the evil vampire Varalys.

To do so, he must collect three sacred jewels that will open the door to Varalys' castle.

The player can explore the world freely, engaging in combat with monsters and collecting items that increase their stats or grant special abilities.

As they progress through the game, they will find secret passages and hidden items that can help them on their quest.

Gameplay consists of navigating through an overhead view while fighting enemies and gaining experience points (EXP) to level up.

EXP is gained through killing monsters or completing quests from NPCs.

Players are also able to purchase items from shops using gold collected from treasure chests, defeated enemies, or sold items.

There are four different weapons available: sword, spear, bow and boomerang; each with its own unique attack power and range when used against enemies.

In addition to these weapons there are several magical spells which can be used to heal wounds or cast powerful attacks upon foes.

Hydlide was met with mixed reviews upon release due to its slow pace and lack of direction at times; however it has since become a cult classic among NES fans for its open-endedness and non-linear nature as well as its challenging boss battles.

While it may not be remembered as one of the greatest games ever made, Hydlide remains an important piece of gaming history as one of the first open-world games ever released for home consoles
