The player takes control of a party of eight characters, each with their own unique talents and abilities, as they explore the world of Krynn. The characters must battle monsters, solve puzzles, and uncover secrets while exploring dungeons and other locations throughout the world. The main objective is to find and defeat the evil dragonlord Takhisis, ruler of Krynn.

Combat is turn-based with characters having a limited amount of hit points which can be replenished by using healing magic or potions.

The graphics for Heroes of the Lance are fairly simplistic but still manage to capture a lot of detail in both character sprites and backgrounds alike. The music is also quite good with tracks ranging from upbeat battle themes to somber exploration pieces that really bring out the fantasy atmosphere in this classic title.
