Bionic Commando is a classic side-scrolling action platformer released by Capcom in 1988 for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). The game follows the adventures of Super Joe, a bionic commando whose mission is to infiltrate and destroy an enemy fortress.
The game was revolutionary for its time due to its unique gameplay mechanic: rather than jumping, players control Super Joe with a bionic arm that can be used to swing from platforms and grapple onto walls. This innovative gameplay mechanic made Bionic Commando stand out from other NES titles at the time.
Players must traverse through eight levels filled with enemies and obstacles, using their bionic arm to reach higher platforms, dodge projectiles, and take out enemies. As players progress through each level they will encounter stronger enemies as well as bosses which require special strategies to defeat. Along the way, power-ups can be collected which give Super Joe extra health or enhanced abilities such as increased speed or more powerful shots.
The game also features several non-linear elements which allow players to explore different paths throughout each level. These alternate paths often contain hidden items or bonus points which are necessary for unlocking secret levels later on in the game.
Bionic Commando was praised upon its release for its unique gameplay mechanics and challenging difficulty level. It has since become a cult classic among NES fans and continues to be one of the most beloved games on the console today.
