Magmax is a 1985 sci-fi themed side-scrolling shooter video game developed and published by Nichibutsu for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). The game was released exclusively in Japan on October 25th, 1985.

The player takes control of Magmax, a robotic insect-like creature that must traverse through five stages to save the human race from an alien invasion. The player moves Magmax left and right while shooting at enemies and obstacles, while also collecting power-ups to increase their firepower or restore health. Magmax has two forms: a standard form and a mech form. In mech form, the player can fire two shots at once and shoot in multiple directions, although they are unable to move around as quickly.

The stages in Magmax are divided into three distinct types: horizontal scrolling stages, vertical scrolling stages, and maze stages. In horizontal scrolling stages, the player must traverse through levels filled with enemies and obstacles while avoiding enemy fire. Vertical scrolling stages require the player to ascend up platforms while avoiding enemies and projectiles. Maze stages feature branching pathways in which the player must navigate using power-ups that increase their speed or allow them to jump higher. These power-ups are dropped by defeated bosses throughout the game.

Throughout each stage of Magmax there are various bonus items for the player to collect such as coins or gems which can be exchanged for extra lives or continues at shops located between levels. As well as these bonuses, there are also hidden warp zones located throughout each stage which allow players to skip ahead if they can find them.

Magmax is a challenging yet rewarding gaming experience with its unique blend of side-scrolling shooting action combined with platforming elements set against vibrant backdrops with catchy music accompanying it all along the way. It is considered one of the best games released on NES during its time due to its innovative gameplay mechanics and addictive nature.
