Prize Fighter is a boxing game released for the Sega CD (Mega-CD) console in 1994. Developed by Digital Pictures, it was one of the first games to use motion capture technology, allowing for realistic movement and animation of the boxers in the game. The game also featured full voice acting and a soundtrack composed by Don Veca.
Players take on the role of an up-and-coming boxer who must fight his way through a series of opponents in order to become champion. Players are able to customize their boxer's appearance and attributes, including strength, speed, agility, and endurance. As players progress through the game they can earn money which can be used to purchase upgraded equipment and training sessions which will help improve their boxer's performance.
Gameplay consists of two rounds in each match with players controlling their boxer's movements using either a controller or a light gun accessory. Each boxer has three basic punches; jab, cross, and hook as well as two special moves; uppercut and body blow. Players must also defend against their opponent's attacks by blocking or dodging as well as using counterattacks when appropriate. In between rounds players can choose to rest or train which will help improve their stats for the next round.
The game features multiple modes including Exhibition Mode where players can practice against a computer controlled opponent or select from several pre-set opponents; Tournament Mode where players compete in a series of fights against increasingly difficult opponents culminating in a championship bout; Career Mode where players progress through multiple divisions over several years; and Versus Mode where two people can play against each other either directly connected or via modem linkup.
Prize Fighter was praised for its realistic animation and gameplay as well as its deep customization options making it one of the more enduring boxing games of its day. The game was followed by an enhanced version titled Prize Fighter: Championship Edition which added new opponents, new music tracks, improved controls, and additional training options making it even more enjoyable than its predecessor.
