Primal Rage is a fighting game originally released for the Sega 32X in 1996. The game was developed by Atari Games and uses the same engine as their classic arcade hit, Mortal Kombat. Primal Rage is set in a post-apocalyptic world where seven giant dinosaurs and apes have been released from a meteor that crashed into Earth millions of years ago. These creatures, known as "The Beasts", are now vying for control of the planet and its inhabitants. The player takes control of one of these beasts and must battle their way through multiple levels to become the ultimate ruler of Earth.
The main gameplay consists of two-on-two battles between two players or computer opponents. The game is presented in a side-scrolling perspective with each character having their own unique moves and special attacks. The player can also interact with certain environmental objects such as rocks, barrels, trees, and even volcanoes to help them win the fight. There are also various power-ups scattered throughout each stage which can give your beast an advantage over their opponent.
Primal Rage features several different modes including Arcade Mode, Versus Mode, Practice Mode, Survival Mode, Team Battle Mode, and Tag Team Battle Mode. In addition to these modes there are also unlockable secret characters which can be accessed by completing certain tasks during gameplay or by entering codes at the title screen.
Primal Rage has since been ported to numerous platforms including PlayStation 2 and Xbox Live Arcade but it's original release on the Sega 32X remains one of its most popular versions today. The game has also spawned numerous sequels throughout the years which have added new characters, stages, and modes to the original formula while still retaining its classic 2D look and feel.
Overall Primal Rage is an excellent fighting game that offers hours upon hours of fun for both casual gamers looking for some quick button mashing action as well as hardcore fans who want to master every move and combo available in the game’s vast roster of characters. With its imaginative post-apocalyptic setting and intense battles Primal Rage is sure to captivate any fan of traditional fighting games making it one of Sega’s most beloved titles from the 32X era.
