Spider-Man and the X-Men in Arcade's Revenge is a 2D side-scrolling platform game released for the Sega Game Gear in 1992. Developed by Software Creations, the game was published by LJN Ltd. It is based on Marvel Comics' Spider-Man and X-Men comic books, and features a variety of characters from both series. The player takes control of one of four playable characters (Spider-Man, Wolverine, Cyclops or Gambit) to battle through various levels, collecting power-ups and defeating enemies along the way.
The story follows Arcade, a villainous mutant who has created an amusement park called "Murderworld" as part of his plan for revenge against the X-Men. He kidnaps Professor Xavier and forces him to run Murderworld while he holds him captive. The X-Men are then sent to rescue Xavier from Arcade's clutches and shut down Murderworld once and for all.
Players choose one of the four playable characters - Spider-Man, Wolverine, Cyclops or Gambit - each with their own unique abilities to use throughout the game. Spider-Man can shoot webs at enemies to incapacitate them; Wolverine can slash through foes with his claws; Cyclops can shoot beams of energy from his eyes; and Gambit can throw explosives at enemies. As they progress through each level, players must defeat enemies such as robots, mutants and bosses using their character's special abilities in order to reach their objectives.
Throughout each level there are various items that can be collected that will help aid players on their journey. These items include health power ups that will restore lost health points when picked up; extra lives that will give players an extra chance if they die; bonus points that will increase their score; coins which can be used to purchase upgrades or items; keys which open locked doors or areas; and tokens which allow access to bonus stages where even more items can be found.
At the end of each stage there is a boss battle against one of Arcade's henchmen such as Magneto or Sabretooth who must be defeated before progressing further into the game. Once all stages have been completed successfully, players face off against Arcade himself in a final showdown before being able to rescue Professor Xavier from captivity and shut down Murderworld for good.
Overall Spider-Man and the X-Men in Arcade's Revenge is a fun side scrolling platformer with plenty of action packed moments for fans of both series to enjoy. With its vibrant visuals, catchy soundtrack and challenging gameplay it remains an enjoyable title even today despite its age.
