Last Action Hero is a sidescrolling action game released for the Sega Game Gear in 1993. Developed by Hand Made Software, it was based upon the film of the same name, and follows the events of the movie. The player takes on the role of Jack Slater, a tough-as-nails cop who must fight his way through several levels filled with enemies and obstacles.
The game begins with Jack Slater in pursuit of a mysterious figure known as "the Terror". After chasing him through a variety of levels, Jack eventually confronts him in an underground lair. After defeating him, Jack discovers that he has been tricked into helping to free an evil sorcerer named Benedict. With this revelation, Jack sets out to stop Benedict and his minions from taking over the world.
Gameplay consists of side-scrolling platforming sections interspersed with combat against various enemies. Players can jump between platforms, climb ladders, and use various weapons to dispatch their foes. As players progress through each level they will encounter bosses which require special strategies or techniques to defeat them. In addition to standard weapons such as guns and knives, Jack can also collect power-ups which allow him to throw fireballs or become temporarily invincible.
In order to proceed further into the game players must collect various keys which are hidden throughout each level or given as rewards after defeating certain enemies or bosses. These keys are used to unlock doors that provide access to new areas or items needed for progression such as health packs or energy tanks.
Overall Last Action Hero offers a great mix of action-packed platforming and intense combat set within familiar environments from the movie it’s based on while still providing plenty of challenge and replayability for fans who want more than just an easy stroll through memory lane. It’s an enjoyable game that provides a good balance between fun and difficulty while also providing an interesting story line that ties into its source material nicely.
